Up-cycle Hawaii

In today’s episode of Beyond the Buoy, I touch base with Mattie Mae Larson of Upcycle Hawaii. Located on the Big Island of Hawai’i Mattie finds trash and turns it into treasure. Taking marine debris, plastic, and whatever else washes up on the shore and turns it into innovative products that educate and inspire others to do the same. It was a real pleasure being able to catch up with Mattie and learn more as to what she is doing to help clean our coastlines.

Mattie Mae Larson

Meet Mattie Mae Larson, conservationist, creative, and a local Big Islander; she takes a different approach when it comes to finding trash along the shoreline.

For Mattie, the ocean has always played a big role in her daily life. Growing up in Hawaii, the shoreline was her playground and later her inspiration for Upcycle Hawaii.

Collecting reclaimed materials from a variety of different sources. Mattie, being the creative she is, started making products out of the resources she was finding.

With the support of friends and family and a few farmers markets, Larson was off to the races and Upcycle Hawaii was born!

From Trash to Treasures

A small business located on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Its goal is to divert overlooked materials found along the shoreline or in landfill  and turn them into fun, innovative products. The reclaimed materials range from plastic, bicycle tires, packaging materials and a variety of other products that most of us would simply throw away.
